Vapors Issue 50 – Futura
Welcome to Issue 50. I think.
Frankly, I’m not sure how I feel about this cover. I like the art, but it gives me a little anxiety. Legendary NY guy Stash shot Futura’s art, but then he was pissed that it went to print, because he wanted to sub in another photo at the last minute. It’d already gone to press, and now I feel like we might have beef. Hopefully he’s forgiven and forgotten. Otherwise this could be more salt on the wound. I’m sorry, Stash.
But the cover isn’t really important. Wait, no, it is important. Anyone with any knowledge of culture, art, and collectibles will instantly recognize this as the work of Futura 2000. While 2000 might seem like a ways back to you, Futura made his name back in the 70s as one of New York City’s most prolific graffiti artists, painting the city with a style that’s influenced everything from the logos you see to your favorite artists. And he’s still at the top of his game, whether it’s his latest sold-out show in LA, the Nike collaborations or the $1000 Burton Vapor snowboard draped in his artwork. (Futura on the Burton Vapor and Vapors Magazine—coincidence?) You’ll find all this and more inside this issue.
You’ll also find interviews with some skaters I like, like Torey Pudwill and Greg Lutzka; artist profiles of Brooklyn’s JK5 and Spanish skate artist Cocobula; and of course the product section is stacked like a plastic surgeon’s third wife. Oh, and for the guy that has everything, our Holiday Gift Guide even includes miniature pet cows (think about it: free milk and, later, burgers).
You might even want to check out our site. It’s decent! And sometimes funny. But mostly decent. www.vaporsmagazine.com
Please, stop shivering out there in the cold, it’s making you uncomfortable. Come inside, Vapors has a warm cup of cocoa ready for you—yes, the kind with little marshmellows.
As I meant to say from the start, welcome to issue 50.
