However, to their credit, MTV Brazil nominated some great acts such as Mixhell, Boss in Drama, and Database as potential candidates for Best Electronic act and on that night, the guys of N.A.S.A. walked away with the prize.

When it was announced that basketball legend Michael Jordan was being inducted into the Hall of Fame, there were talks of commissioned artwork and statues going up in North Carolina and Chicago. In a surprising and amazing twist, famed artist Shepard Fairey has done three different prints of Jordan based on his time at UNC, Chicago, and his new Hall of Fame portrait. The project is a collaboration with Upper Deck and a little over 500 of each print were created.

To check out the whole series and purchase prints, head over to Upper Deck or OBEY.

If there was one photographer that had his finger on the pulse of everything cool, that photographer would be Glen E. Friedman. He captured some of the most iconic images of such skateboarding legends as Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Duane Peters, Stacy Peralta, and other in the late seventies and early eighties. Glen was also there in the early stages of the punk and hardcore scene, documenting the angst, energy, and rebellion of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Suicidal Tendencies, and the Bad Brains. But Glen Didn’t stop there. He recognized the parallels between hardcore and hip hop, and he snapped some of the most well known photographs of Public Enemy, Ice T, Run DMC, and many more. Many of these photographs are considered to be the subject’s definitive portraits, and they are images that many of you have grown up with.

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition with legendary photographer Glen E. Friedman. The most highly anticipated event of Subliminal Projects’ season, Friedman’s Idealist Propaganda encompasses the artist’s first major retrospective to date, featuring a rare selection of Friedman’s oeuvre, including twenty-five never before exhibited photographs from his celebrated iconic photos of the pioneering skate, punk and hip-hop subcultures to his equally political and polarized subject matter of the natural world. Idealist Propaganda is a transcendent exhibition and ultimately Friedman’s most definitive creative and philosophical statement. It is Subliminal Projects’ first solo exhibition of photography by a represented artist.

For Idealist Propaganda, Friedman exhibits his prolific collection in salon style, sampling seminal, never before seen photos from his Fuck You All collection, in addition to previously shown works in his The Idealist solo exhibition of 2004 and Fuck You All international touring exhibition, which include his Fuck You Heroes and Fuck You Too series. On display for the first time ever are images from his Recognize monograph, a dramatic and overt manifesto of aesthetic idealism, compressed and recontextualized through the singular, yet challenging and amorphous nature of clouds. Through these uninhibited photographs, brilliantly captured mostly from within the clouds themselves, Friedman seeks to reintroduce a raw, beautiful, and vital way of seeing the world.

EXHIBITION DATES:
December 13th – January 9th

OPENING RECEPTION:
Saturday, December 13, 8-11pm

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS GALLERY
1331 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90026

LA tastemaker/restauranteur Steven Arroyo (Malo, GOAT, Stork, 750ml) and sometimes Vapors contributor Curtis Kulig are opening some kind of store/gallery on 3rd Street near the Beverly Center in LA. For the grand opening show/party, Curtis recruited some of his best buds and favorite artists–a pretty impressive list including Shepard Fairey, “Haculla” Harif Guzman, Bigfoot, Anthony Lister, Chris Pastras, Skullphone, Killpixie, David Browne, and Rick Rodney. It’s a pretty unique spot they’ve got, so this should be dope. Get your Dewar’s on.

But honestly I’m not into Hyde, and as a young and pretty coke-hole (think names like Lindsay and Cisco) I think it’s an unusual choice for an art afterparty. But since I flaked on Curtis’ b-day at Hyde, I hereby promise to appear at Hyde. But I only promise to buy one $15 Jack and Coke.
