Indie-folk darlings, Band of Horses, never struck me as a natural home for the voice of Cee-Lo, but after hearing his take on their massive single, “No One’s Gonna Love You”, maybe they should make room for a second vocalist. The strength of the Atlanta native’s voice soars on a track about young love and loss and the accompanying video takes you through the whole roller coast in three and a half minutes.

Not many artists have the duality of Ludacris in hip-hop. The ability to have commercial appeal while being aware of the roots for so-called backpackers, Luda has the potential to impress both. At times he swayed more towards commercial acclaim, but there’s brilliant moments on his newest release “Theater of the Mind” that proves that he does in fact keeps his ears to the street.

“MVP,” the DJ Premier produced track, is arguably the best record on the album. Claiming that he’s “the first southern-rapper on a Primo track,” ‘Cris conquers the track with ease (even though Scarface and Devin the Dude have blessed Premier songs prior to the ‘Mouth of the South’). Also, the 9th Wonder produced “Do the Right Thing,” featuring Common and Spike Lee, is the perfect way to end the album. Uplifting and with boom-bap production providing proof that Luda hasn’t lost his roots.

There’s never a doubt that Ludacris was a lyrical heavyweight, just at times his musical backdrops left a little to be desired. Songs like “Southern Gangsta” and “Nasty Girl” are both needed for radio play, but intrude on displaying his capabilities.

“Theater of the Mind” is a solid album, even if times the production isn’t as dope as the rapper. Maybe it’s my personal bias (as being anti-crunk enduced rap) but in these days and times, a commercial artist having both a Premier and 9th Wonder track is a victory beyond belief. What this album proves is that Luda is still one of the dopest lyricists and when he has the right tracks, he’s unstoppable. Is this his classic? No, but with spinkles of genius here and there his classic isn’t too far away.

Philly friends Stevie and DJ Don Cannon have gone Voltron and are opening their own shop in their new home, Atlanta. Sk8tique sounds like it just might be a skate boutique, and at the opening party you can expect Stevie and Don’s boys like Ludacris, Flo Rida, Rich Boy and Ne-Yo to show. I don’t know that they’ll be doing any surprise performances, but there will be performances by The Cool Kids (uh, is there anywhere they’re not performing lately?), Asher Roth, and E-40.

I’ve been running things under the radar in Atlanta for the last 12 years. I’ve played a key role in solidifying ATL as an institution—as a DJ, club owner, promoter, radio and television personality, record store proprietor, innovator, accelerator, king maker, and room shaker. I’ve left no musical stones unturned. And I also stay up late as fuck, which is why no one knows who I am. I sleep most of the day so people don’t know what I really look like. I’ve deejayed with Raekwon in Paris and I’ve cut on Bubba Sparxxx’s album. I am one of the founders of the late great record store More Dusty Than Digital, and the party in the basement known as El Bar. From DMC to ITF, Bonde Do Role to MSTRKRFT…I’ve dunn dunn it all, at all times of the day.

Right now I’m working on…
Opening a new bar because the one I revamped got shut down for no good reason other than it was too successful. For the next 12 months I’m working on an album with a local band called Noot D’ Noot and Sleepy Brown which will be featured on my radio show on scion.com/broadband called No Static At All. I am finishing my new CD—look for it. And you can find me every Saturday making asses shake at MJQ.

But I’d rather be…
Doing a photo shoot with Ricky Powell or starring in a Coen Brothers film.

My most prized possessions are…
Relationsips I’ve built over the years, my radio show, my record collection, my brass knuckles, and my Rane TTM57 mixer which gets the job done every fucking time.

My four-month-old daughter Amalee.

The first thing I do in the morning is…
Go to sleep. When I wake up in the afternoon I take a piss, shower, cook some eggs and bacon and drink a glass of O.J.

Bun B ripped his ATL show last night @ The Loft. It was Bun’s VERY FIRST time playing with a live band behind him and after the performance he said it wouldn’t be his last. His set included new hits like “International Players Anthem” to classics like “Front, Back, Side to Side,” which had the entire building doing just that. Definitely a dope show in front of a packed house, UGK FOR LIFE.
