After four months, and over one million votes, Street Science bested six other regional finalists to win the $10,000 grand prize and the honor to have its artwork featured on a nationally distributed Mountain Dew can in 2011.

Longtime skaters and Tracy, Calif. residents Justin Lomba and Jeremy Morgan opened the Street Science Skate Shop in February, 2008 with the simple idea of keeping skateboarding true to its raw street origins. Today, the shop is run by Jeremy, Justin and his wife Tara Lomba. Jonathan “Seb” Costa, a local teenager, is the artist who designed the winning can. The design features Tracy Boulevard, the popular water tower and a pit bull riding a skateboard.

Mountain Dew Green Label Art: Shop Series kicked off in June with the unveiling of Rodriguez and Pendleton’s can design, which served as the inspiration for the program. Thirty-five shops partnered with a local artist to create their collaborative design and competed regionally and consumers voted to determine the seven finalists. A second round of voting determined the winner. The finalists of Mountain Dew Green Label Art: Shop Series are: Black Sheep (Charlotte, N.C.), Blindside (Salt Lake City, Utah), Freedom (Mesa, Ariz.), Modest (Berwyn, Ill.), Nocturnal (Philadelphia, Pa.), Westside (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) and Street Science. Representatives from each of the seven shops and the artists were in Las Vegas for the winning announcement.

Mountain Dew launched its first Green Label Art program featuring a collection of limited-edition bottles designed by artists from across the nation in 2007. To find out more information about the program, see all 35 can designs and the Paul Rodriguez-Don Pendleton collaboration, visit www.greenlabelart.com.

In this exclusive time lapsed video, Los Angeles based artist Patrick Martinez takes you through his creative process from sketch to completed work. Three weeks is compressed into four minutes. Music is by Jay Electronica.

Martinez is currently working on a new body of work that is inspired by his thoughts, ideas and experiences which are fueled by the city of Los Angeles, the place he calls home. His art has been shown at various galleries worldwide. He has worked with and continues to work with brands like Upper Playground, Stussy, Nike, Adidas, Undefeated and many more.

www.patrickmartinez.com

About Patrick Martinez
Since the vivid days of Patrick’s childhood he was drawing or scribbling on something. In his teenage years circa early 90’s, he was introduced to Hip Hop culture and exclusively to one of its elements, graffiti. Graffiti remains a vital influence in his work. Hip Hop has influenced his art ever since he understood what it was about, movies like “Wild Style” and “Style Wars” turned him onto the Hip Hop movement in his earlier days. In 1994 he attended Pasadena High School Visual Arts and Design Academy where he learned and practiced his image making skills.

Patrick graduated high school and moved on to Pasadena City College. Patrick spent three years at PCC experimenting, developing his artistic skills and trying to find a hint of himself at the same time. He kept a steady career doing illustrations and design work mainly for underground and mainstream record labels that catered to the Hip Hop community. He art directed for Concentrated Entertainment for two years as well as other projects that came to him from other companies like Stones Throw and Seditious Beats (now Divine Forces). In 2001 he was ready to take on the next stage of art discipline. This led him to apply to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he received a bachelor of fine arts in illustration.

Patrick focuses on the phenomenology of his surroundings. He brings sublime beauty to things that aren’t thought of as conventionally beautiful. He uses subject matter such as everyday people that aren’t usually painted into the limelight and elements of the city that would be thought of as objects we take for granted. He uses these objects as communicative mediums. Patrick works with intellect and intuition in creating pieces of art that reflect and document situations that are ever present around him. Vitality and rhythm are the essence and energy in his artwork.

Hello my name is…
Lola.

I was raised in…
Riverside, CA.

The reason that you’re reading about me is…
I am a painter in Los Angeles with a rather amazing body of work which is about to reveal itself, haha!

Right now I’m working on…
A collection of paintings pertaining to our truth, and how to find balance within that. inspired by music, philosophy, intrigue, Asian food, growth, and painters past. Oh, and tattoos.

But I’d rather be…
Traveling or exploring. My curiosities are strong these days.

My most prized possessions are…
Cross between my childhood Disney stories on vinyl and shoes (can’t get enough).

But I’d give it all away for…
Infinite knowledge.

The first thing I do in the morning is…
Steep some earl grey and enjoy.

The last thing I do at night is…
Eat candy and clean my brushes.

My momma always said…
Go to your room.

I love it when people…
Are passionate.

I hate it when people…
Harm animals.

If you ever see me walking down the street…
Give me a high five. I love those!

My most notable run-in with the law…
I’m pretty good, only the occasional run-in’s from hanging out with punk rock friends who often enjoyed a good beer run…frequently and so entertaining.

If I had to say sorry it would be because…
I didn’t understand.

I get real aggro when…
Strangers are rude. No need for that, you don’t even know me! Try a smile, that’s contagious.

The last time I swore I’d never drink was after a night of…
I consumed a fifth of Southern Comfort, and didn’t die nor did I black out, which was really horrific.

Future projects and plans…
Many many! But first, I’m going to compile a book

And before I leave I’d like to give a shout out to…
Let’s make it the wolf pack! Bill, Tim, Travis, Ross, Nika, The Klaxons, Space Cat, Petker, and the one and only Gary Baseman. You all have made the second half of my painting experience more than inspirational!! High fives!

Mear One: examines the aspects of content that accompany any piece of art. He is literally working on communicating some of what we as a society have forgotten or are unable to see.

The result is a visual experiment that tests the icons of the culture industry. His work involves a participation in which Theodor Adorno claims that it goes under the name of terror in mass culture.
