16 Jun 2010

I met up with Paul Wall real quick at the release of Famous’ first venture into the footwear game at the Famous store. Sad to say my recorder unexpectedly stop recording but not before I got to ask a few question about what’s he’s been up too and his new album.

DSC 0203 23 540x361 Paul Wall

It’s been a while since we’ve seen you. How is everything going with you?

It’s been going real good man. Just been taking business on the home front, my son is 4 now and my daughter is 2, and that’s been the most rewarding part of my life. Take care of the kids, man, and still be able to do what I love. I travel around a lot on the road touring, I’m usually on the road, and haven’t been doing as many albums as I would like too or as many songs as I would like too. But, I think the industry; they kinda want you to do radio hits and big hits. I don’t they really focus on good music anymore too much anymore. I’m kind of the reverse, where I never really had too many big radio hits lately, but I think I’ve been putting out some really good music—some good quality music.

But I’ve been stepping my internet game up, I got my new website up paulwallbaby.com, I got an iPhone app and a Droid app, you can download it for free, and bunch of stuff like that. So, you know, just been trying to grind with it.

One of my favorite songs is, “I got the internet going nuts.”

Yeah, for real, it seemed like I had the internet going on at first and then I calmed down, and I was like, shit, I need to step it up and get it going nuts again.

You mentioned that radio only wants the big hits, so for as an artist like yourself, how do you come back from being ‘underground’ for the last few years to getting back on the radio?

DSC 0204 23 540x361 Paul Wall

It’s kind of like a compromise, you can’t just do everything underground and everything raw, you need to have that radio type of flavor in it to get people pumped up about, the promotion going right, get everything going right and get the right look you want. But, like I said, everybody just cares about a radio hit and first week record sales and that’s it. After the first week of record sales, nobody cares anymore, after the radio song is done, nobody cares about the other songs on the album.

When I grew up, I just always liked to listen to a CD or tape all the way through, where you didn’t have to skip songs. Like, you listen to Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, UGK’s Riding Dirty, Outkast and the Hot Boys, all those tapes and CD’s you could listen too all the way through. But, nowadays, its like one or two songs on the album is good and that’s it.

But you know, it’s a compromise. I did this album, Heart of a Champion, comes out July 13th. Travis Barker, he produced half of it, so musically, it’s a little bit different than most of the music that I’ve put out. And even when I say Travis Barker, they think its all rock style, but its not, its straight hip-hop, real hard-core hip-hop, and it sounds incredible man. A lot of the features are crazy on it too; Raekwon is on the album, Jim Jones, Jay Electronica, Kid Sister, and then I got Yo Gotti and then I got all my Texas homeboys like, Bun B, Chamillionaire—there’s a big song with Chamillionaire, Devin The Dude, Zero, Slim Thug, so its like a compilation.

I’m not going to lie, but for some reason the recorder stopped. Sorry.

“Bang Bang Bang” is the first single (feat. Q-Tip) from Mark Ronson‘s upcoming album, “The Record Collection”. While it may seem that the English producer/musician has been fairly quiet since his last album “Version” came out in 2007, he has been hard at work behind the scenes producing for an eclectic mix of artists, from Estelle and Nas, to rock bands such as The Kaiser Chiefs and The Rumble Strips. If you happened to miss his recent Zelda-inspired video for “Circuit Breaker”, check it out here!
