hanni_cat HANNI EL KHATIB

I know what you’re thinking. Folk music is like some “This Land is your Land” Woody Guthrie-ass lame-o shit. It’s cool that you’re narrow-minded, ‘cause you haven’t heard Hanni El Khatib after a bottle of Jack Daniels and a carton of sin. Here’s what it would have been like if Johnnie Cash had iChat

Hanni, how are you this fine spring afternoon?

Amazing, Yas.

Listening to your music, I imagine you as always sort of melancholy and also somewhat wan. Are you trying to make people feel sad?

Naw, I’m usually in a pretty happy mood most of the time. Being sad sucks, but it just so happens it’s easier to write a song if I’m a little bummed out and I’m coming off a mean hangover or something.

Would you say a whiskey hangover is more conducive to the writing process or say, one brought on by shochu?

Probably whiskey, more of a daily drink. I think shochu should be reserved for karaoke parties.

Anyway, moving on. Where do you draw inspiration from? Besides New Eras and hoodies.

My friend Grunge Mike is rolling a joint right now, so I guess we could start there. But mostly from the past. People don’t do shit like they used to anymore. Speaking of inspiration, when are we gonna start talking about guns and strip clubs?

Oh right. When are we going to go to a strip club and shoot strippers? You promised.

Wait, wait—shoot a stripper? That’s so avant-garde.

Trying to keep you edgy, son.

I feel that.
