Johnson (Blu) & Jonson (Mainframe)’s first “release,” Powders and Oils, knocked like none other. The first time I heard it I stopped mid-sentence to find out the hell it was. Below the Heavens with Exile was a knockout and C.R.A.C.’s The Piece Talks was a home run. This time around Blu teams back up with Mainframe to release their first studio album Johnson & Jonson. They capture the laissez-faire West Coast frame of mind without sacrificing any substance, boom-bap or hedonism. Their versatility shines on tracks like “Anything is Possible.”
