From the first spin of the title track, There’s Only One sets itself as a stone-cold cosmic journey with Buff as an even tougher, more earnest emcee than on his solo debut, Pure. The evolution of Buff parallels the progression of the beat-makers backing him: the Lab Techs. Their electro-soul boom bap has moved to the stratosphere with the cooled-out bass line of “Love The Love” and feel-good synth of “Dream Streets.” Bangables deserving of arena performance include a hard basic four over keys on “I Know The Secret,” and Buff’s impenetrable lyrical match-up with Black Milk on “Never Fall.” But even as Buff and Black spit steel for their home state of Michigan, Buff gets most grimy on a grit-laden, silky stand-out in “Real Appeal.”
