elzhi2 ELZHI
By LC Weber

Elzhi is the crowned prince of Detroit’s tight-knit yet burgeoning hip-hop community. Starting out in the ’90s as one third of the group 925 Colony, he’s now half of Slum Village. Elzhi sharpened his cutting lyricism over three SV albums and appearances with J Dilla, Little Brother and Black Milk. On his first solo effort, The Preface, Elzhi calls to court the toughest MCs in the D to form a united front as many artists abandon a city rife with struggle. But it’s that same struggle that makes Elzhi the toughest lyricist and crowns him hip-hop royalty.
