Max Mega: I offered it for free for several reasons: One, I’m one of those people who doesn’t buy CDs I’ve never heard of. Also, I really wanted people to get a chance to just listen—I was sure they would love me. Plus, I didn’t pay for beats, so to be fair to the producers, I couldn’t make profit. Most importantly, it was a good way to have the word spread about my music.
Speaking of production, the production on the album is crazy! Who did you work with on For the Listeners?
The main producer was my man Ced Hughes, who mixed and engineered the whole thing; Mel Vi B did “Pretty Girl,” Dante Lewis has one track and so does DJ Day. I used Soundtrakk and DJ Premier for two.
You came up in Virginia Beach, VA—did that affect your flow any?
It affected it a lot, because I grew up in the era when skate clothes and skinny jeans wasn’t cool, so I never really related to what everybody else was going through, but my school was so diverse, so I had a lot more freedom here to learn from experience and do things than I would living elsewhere. I was exposed to more here, I guess.
What are your favorite brands right now?
I get hook-ups, but for clothing and kicks: VII and Nike SBs.
You want to shout out any of your suppliers?
Yes! VII is my endorsement, Sole Brother Skate Shop, PayperRoute, Play Clothes and Illusive Media.
Pick one: Mega Man or Fantastic Max?
Mega Man.
If you could bring back one fashion trend, what would it be?
Cords.
The pants?! Why?
They dope, yo! They’re warm and something different than jeans.
Why do women make great fans?
They actually like you, women don’t lie, and they stay long-term fans. Dudes jump from rapper to rapper. I usually see girls buying albums for full price anyway, and if they know of the show, they bring their girls too.
So tell the people why they should go out and download your album
’Cause it’s pretty much better than things you pay for and if you don’t like it, I’ll give your money back.
